Show News 2009

Apart from a heavy shower right on cue for the opening, the afternoon weatherwise was as good as it could be. A large crowd of adults and children enjoyed the sunshine and all that the show had on offer. The Show was opened at 1.00pm by MP Ian Cawsey and also attended by local East Riding councillors, Andrew Percy and Caroline Fox, who stayed all afternoon chatting to people. There were lots for children to do and see. Children’s entertainers Flo and Co, after their very successful morning session of circus skills training, were on hand all afternoon entertaining the children with balloon modelling, dancing and magic and in the community centre building, Rose was busy face painting.
Outside, there was a Bouncy Castle, Dylan the Donkey pulling his brightly coloured cart, a display of antique bicycles from Bygone Bykes, “Beat the Goalie” aka Richard Smith, children’s races, a Fire Engine on show and a sophisticated modern tractor, displayed by CoOp Farms, a classic Bentley wedding car and a large lorry from Lowfield Transport, with a competition to guess how much fuel it had used since it started work. The Tug of War Competition organised by Jason Walton proved to be a particular highlight with a team from the Half Moon at Reedness finally victorious. The children’s tug of war which followed earned lots of cheers and drew a large crowd of supporters.
Inside, apart from the exhibits, there were plenty of games for children and adults to play, including Hoop La, Hook a Duck, Roll a Coin and lots more. The Committee are very grateful to the “Glamour Girls” Lifestyle Group who manned the games and who presented Ian Cawsey with a cheque for £150 which they have raised towards the cost of refurbishing the Community Centre, to enable it to be a more useful asset to the Marshlands Community.
Competition in the Horticultural and Handicraft Sections was very keen with the largest entry for years. Trophies for all the various sections were presented at the end of the afternoon along with the prizes for the various competitions associated with the show. During the afternoon, the Ladies of Whitgift Church provided tasty refreshments and were kept busy with a steady stream of customers, finally selling the cakes not needed during the afternoon.
The evening entertainment was very well supported , with live music from Rosanna Jane, barbeque style food in the adjacent refreshment tent-thanks to Katie and Pete Gunson for their efforts all evening (those bacon hamburgers were something else!!) and a popular well stocked bar.
